Earlshall
Baptist Church has a link with a missionary in Thailand, Emily Chalke.
Emily works with NightLight, a Christian ministry and business in Bangkok
which seeks to combat the sex industry by employing women in a jewellery
business. When
asked about her desire to return and continue her work with NightLight, she
said, “I’m moved when I see the difficulties and desperation
of women, some of whom are my age, who are without equal opportunities and
who find themselves trapped.”
This extract from one of Emily's newsletters gives a flavour of her work.....
" I
oversee most of the administration and rely on volunteers to help out with
this. When we have good volunteers like the past 3 months for example,
I delegate as much of it as I can. This has meant for the past couple of
months I have been able to go back to Thai school in the afternoon (which
I've loved!). However, with almost daily phonecalls from women
I've met on the streets, I need more time freed up to follow up. (today
I've been called by an Uzbek and a Chinese girl both wanting to meet)
I continue to love being at Nightlight, and the
daily challenges are rewarding. However, Nightlight needs to grow
as we are now at capacity and there are thousands of women out there who
need something else. There simply needs to be more workers with the heart,
desire and commitment to bring freedom to the women caught in exploitation
in this city. The harvest is ripe but the workers are few."
